The Journal News – Rockland County Executive Ed Day today announced a new county economic development director, a post Day repeatedly argued was key to improving the county’s finances during his campaign last year.

The new director, Calherbe Monel, ran for Spring Valley mayor last year, and most recently attempted to land a seat on the East Ramapo School Board. He also hosts a cable TV program, The Monel Show. The job pays $85,000 annually.

Here is the news release (verbatim):

After an extensive recruitment and selection process, Rockland County Executive Ed Day today announced the appointment of Calherbe Monel as Director of Economic Development.

« Calherbe’s experience has given him a unique range of skills that will greatly benefit Rockland County, » said Day. « Economic growth is critical to the County’s fiscal sustainability. I am confident that Calherbe will strengthen relationships with our existing business community while working to attract new jobs. »

Monel brings over a decade of economic development, business management and marketing experience to the new position. He most recently served as an IT Business Specialist at Clear Channel in White Plains. Prior to his time at Clear Channel, he worked at Lascomp Institute of IT (LIIT) in Montvale, New Jersey, where he was responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing marketing plans designed to maintain and increase existing business and capture new opportunities. He also reviewed and submitted RFP’s and worked closely with private sector and government purchasing departments.

Monel previously served as Executive Director at Christians United For Haiti, Inc., a nonprofit organization charged with outreach and advocacy in Haitian-American communities in Virginia.

Said Day, « One of my top priorities as County Executive is to grow and diversify Rockland’s economy. With Calherbe leading the charge, we will continue to improve our County by attracting world-class companies and top tech talent to Rockland. »

He is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration from New England College and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Leadership and Management from Regent University. Additionally, Monel holds academic certifications in Nonprofit Leadership and Management and Neighborhood Leadership and Development.

Monel was born in Haiti and immigrated to the United States in 1991. He is fluent in French and Haitian Creole and resides in Spring Valley.
