During her 2008 trip to her hometown of Camp-Perrin, Haiti to celebrate “Fete St. Anne”, Naika Charles D’Haiti recognized the opportunity to give back to the community of Camp-Perrin, sparking the birth of Project St. Anne. PSA is an international non-profit organization established by Haitian Americans whose mission is to enrich the community through social endeavors by providing Nutritional, Financial, and Educational support. Project St. Anne strives to serve and maintain the dignity of the impoverished community of Haiti by embodying “The Helping Hands of St. Anne”. Surrounded by a small, yet mighty team of people PSA is changing lives one family at a time.
In 2008 PSA fed close to 200 men, women, and children giving birth to the Feast of St. Anne. Year after year the number grew as the word got out (bri couri nouvel gaye). Today PSA is feeding 5,000 families annually.
In 2001, Naika built and created an initiative more sustainable and launched the Education Sponsorship Program to provide an education to underprivileged children. By connecting with community leaders, Naika conducted a clear assessment of areas of extreme need to assist families in paying for their children’s tuition through sponsorship. Starting with only 8 students in the first year, PSA is proud to have provided 250 students with educational support as of the 2019-2020 school year. Education is our motivation!
About 300,000 people died in and around the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince as a 7.0-magnitude earthquake strikes the city. January 12th, 2010 is an unforgettable and devastating date for Haitians globally. Through collaboration with a wide variety of individuals, PSA fundraised, contacted Queen of the Apostle Church in North Carolina, colleagues, friends, and family. Project St. Anne was able to bring a larger relief to the community. We created real impact by touching the lives of 2000 families in addition to widespread distribution of various necessities kits and supplies made possible due to fundraising.
Every year since 2011 Project St. Anne holds a Holiday party for 800 children. New toys, music, new shoes, and a barbecue is the way to close the year making each child deserving of happy moments. Project St. Anne donates medical supplies to St. Anne’s hospital, the supplies are donated by friends and family. PSA also donates yearly to St. Vincent, the good Samaritan nursing home. Food, hygiene, and first aid medical kits are an everyday necessity for the elderly.
In 2018 for PSA’s 10th anniversary the team received an Honor & Merit Award by the Mayor of Camp-Perrin for PSA’s contribution and leadership specifically in education development. A mass was officiated by the head priest in the parish, the students, their parents, parishioners, guests of honor, family and friends gathered for a special celebration on the 25th of July. On the 26th of July for the Feast of St. Anne, we had 2 DJ’s and the kids put on a show for us. Needless to say, our 10th anniversary was spent celebrating the community and its people thanks to the support and leadership of our very own local representative Hebert Montuma. That year team welcomed close to 100 people from all over the world in Camp-Perrin. Moments like these creates an economy boost for the community. Naika believes that as the organization does mission work, everyone gets to experience and discover the beauty of Haiti.
2019 was a very turbulent year due to constant political unrest in the country. Project St. Anne and Queen of Apostles missionaries returned to Haiti for the Feast of St. Anne in July despite the country’s state of insecurity. This time around the team also did some community service by cleaning, and painting St. Joseph’s school and the nursing home. For the first time since 2011 PSA made the decision to not hold the Holiday celebration for the kids due to the continuous political unrest. Naika’s vision and dream has always been to spread the work that PSA is doing in other communities in Haiti. There was no better community then Anse-a-Veau, the birthplace of Naika’s father and a St. Anne parish. Naika contacted several people from the community to raise money and gather new toys for 250 kids. The celebration was a dream come true for Naika and has now added another milestone under PSA’s umbrella of initiatives.
While the Covid-19 pandemic has kept us physically apart from one another and devastated individuals and families around the globe, it has not stopped Project St. Anne from supporting one another and offering a helping hand to our community. For the By March 31st, 2020 PSA was able to create an awareness campaign for the impoverished areas in Camp-Perrin. The awareness campaign was carried out in several rural areas in the community. Through the local team on site in Camp-Perrin, 10 volunteers with the direction of our local representative led a training and awareness sessions for the people carrying the message to rural areas about Covid19 and how to stop the spread of the virus. Clorox and soap kits were distributed to PSA’s 250 students and their families.
Naika and the Chief Administrative Officer Randy Gornail returned to Haiti in July despite these unprecedent times to bring hunger relief to abandoned families. PSA ran a “Kits for Kids Campaign”. 2000 families received food, hygiene, and clothing kits. The community of Camp-Perrin was touched at large. The mission to bring HOPE was well received. The community needed our support now more than ever. We cannot underestimate the living conditions of most people living in Haiti especially now. The need is great, and we are proud to be one of our communities first responders during these desperate times.
Project St. Anne has reached the development stage as part of its mission. A campus is being built in the community of Camp-Perrin. This establishment is an equal opportunity for children and the youth in the community to get an education and learn a profession( métier). This will be a first in the community of Camp-Perrin and maybe in all the south of Haiti!? We are seeking financial support from Haitian Americans. As people who care and act for the people, we do believe that education can save the future generation.
