Haiti Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe is heading to Washington, DC for a meeting with Haiti’s technical and financial partners this week.
Lamothe’s visit to America’s capital will begin Monday and last for a two-day period.
Haiti’s Prime Minister will be joined by a delegation including Senate President Simon Desras Dieuseul, Economy and Finance Minister Marie Carmelle Jean-Marie and Haiti Ambassador to the United States Paul Altidor.
The group will hold talks with senior executives of the IMF and the World Bank.
The discussions will reportedly focus on issues of financial management in general and financial support in particular.
In a statement ahead of the trip, Lamothe said he was determined to work “tirelessly” for the revival of Haiti.
President Michel Martelly Gives Award to Outgoing United States Ambassador
Haiti President Michel Martelly has awarded outgoing United States Ambassador to Haiti Kenneth Merten with the National Order of Honour and Merit.
The award, with the grade of Grand Cross, was given to the diplomat at a ceremony this week in Port-au-Prince’s National Palace.
Martelly and Merten were joined there by Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, members of the Haitian government, Apostolic Nuncio in Haiti Archbishop Bernardito Auza and representatives of the diplomatic corps.
“The presidency thanks you on behalf of the Haitian people for all the work you have done for Haiti,” Martelly said. “You have demonstrated your ability as a diplomat par excellence.”
Merten will be continuing his diplomatic work as the United States’ new Ambassador to Croatia.
“We know you will be back in Haiti,” Martelly said. “When you return, we will welcome you with all the hospitality that we reserve for our best friends.”
Merten has served in Haiti since August 2009. The National Palace said the award was a result of Merten’s work in contributing to democracy and institution-building in Haiti.
Haiti’s Executive Branch Proposes 10 New Bills to Country’s Parliament
Haiti’s Executive Branch has filed new 10 bills with the Chamber of Deputies, according to Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe.
The bills are highlighted by legislation creating a National Fund for Education, which would fund the administration’s programme of free education.
Also awaiting parliamentary approval are a series of bills including a draft law on consumer protection; a bill fixing the number and names of ministries; a bill amending certain articles of the law of June 10, 2009, which lays down general rules on public procurement.
Also included are bills establishing a National Centre for Standardization, Certification and Promotion; a bill covering the organization and functioning of the central services of the Prime Minister; a bill relating to quality control of foodstuffs, a bill sanctioning money laundering and financing of terrorism, an e-government bill and a bill on electronic exchanges.
Lamothe and Martelly, in a statement, said the bills intended to fill the “legal vacuum” in many areas in Haiti, and that the administration would continue to work with Haiti’s Parliament to develop a “viable body of law adapted to the proper functioning of the Haitian state.”
In Haiti’s Milot, a New Step for Tourism
Haiti’s Ministry of Tourism laid the foundation stone on a new tourism welcome office in the town of Milot this weekend.
The project, which is a joint effort by Haiti’s National Institute for Historic Preservation, the International Finance Corporation and the Inter-American Development Bank.
It is the latest step by the ministry and Tourism Minister Stephanie Villedrouin as Haiti seeks to build a new tourism infrastructure in the country.
The town of Milot is five miles from the historic citadel and Sans Souci Palace of King Henri I of Haiti, which was built in the early 19th century.
The fortress was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982.
The town has been the site of a project by Haiti advocate Ron Daniels, who has been looking to help Milot position itself as one of Haiti’s major destinations, with the goal of building a boutique hotel.
Haiti to Receive $7.4M Disbursement from International Monetary Fund

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund has completed the fourth review of Haiti’s performance under its Extended Credit Facility arrangement.
The decision, which was taken on a “lapse of time basis,” will enable the immediate disbursement of $7.4 million to Haiti. Total disbursements under the programme to date stand at $46.9 million.
The “lapse of time” basis describes situations when the IMF’s Executive Board agrees that a proposal can be considered without convening discussions.
Haiti’s Extended Credit Facility was approved on July 21, 2010, along with full relief on the country’s outstanding debt to the IMF of about $268 million.
The relief is part of the IMF’s strategy of supporting longer-term economic reconstruction plans in Haiti, following the January 2010 earthquake.
An IMF mission to Haiti last month found that the country’s economy “continues to grow,” with a projected GDP growth rate of between 4.5 percent and 5.5 percent.
The mission called for an accelerated pace of reconstruction in Haiti at the conclusion of that visit.
