April is Sexually Transmitted Infection Awareness Month
Pomona, NY – The Rockland County Department of Health (RCDOH) announces that April is Sexually Transmitted Infection Awareness Month. Whether you
call them sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), one thing is true: these infections are on the rise in teens and young adults and women are at greater risk. Protect yourself and loved ones from STIs like genital herpes, HPV, chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and HIV by knowing the facts.
Rockland County is seeing a big increase in STIs among teens and young adults especially chlamydia and gonorrhea. The Health Department advises sexually active people to take steps to prevent infection and to be tested and treated. Parentsshouldtalk with teens about prevention and consider vaccinating girls and boys against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) starting as early
as age 9. Schools and parent groups can host presentations on talking with kids about sexual topics.
Infection is spread through sexual contact and you can’t tell by looking at someone whether or not they have an infection. Some common STIs are spread easily by skin to skin contact and most can be transmitted to a newborn during pregnancy or delivery. The most common symptom of an STI is no symptom at all, but some women and men have itching, rash, blisters, pelvic pain, or painful urination.
Even when an effective birth control method is used, sexually active people can be at high risk of getting
infected. These prevention tips can keep you safer:
● Stay in one relationship with an uninfected partner who has only you as a partner
● Use condoms correctly and consistently
● Reduce the number of sex partners
● Avoid sex with people you don’t know
● Don’t mix sex with drugs and alcohol
● Abstinence from sexual contact is the only 100% protection and can be used at any time
“Lifestyle changes that reduce risk, getting regular STI screening, and prompt disease treatment are the
most effective ways to protect one’s health and prevent the spread of all sexually transmitted infection,
including HIV,” said Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert, Rockland County Commissioner of Health.
