(Brooklyn, NY) – Council Member Mathieu Eugene hosted a press conference yesterday with Gama Droiville and members of his family, along with administrative and medical staff at Kings County Hospital Center.  They addressed community leaders and concerned residents who want to see an end to the gun violence that continues to plague many of our city streets.

The press conference took place immediately following Gama’s discharge from the hospital where he has been receiving medical treatment since Monday, April 14, 2014.  At approximately 12 PM that day, at least 7 gunshots were fired at the corner of Flatbush Avenue and Beverly Road in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Gama, a 13 year-old choir boy and an innocent bystander, was hit twice in the head, including once in the right eye.

A 24-year-old man, the individual police believe was the intended target of the shooting, was treated at Kings County Hospital Center for a gunshot wound to his leg and was soon released.  Gama underwent surgery soon after the shooting in an effort to restore vision to the damaged eye.

At the press conference, Council Member Eugene expressed his happiness that Gama was going home with his family, adding that his discharge from the hospital was “a wonderful day for the community.”  Council Member Eugene stated, “We are all working in the community against gun violence.  If we can bring the right influences to youth, then we can make sure they stay on the right path.”  Council Member Eugene, who is the new Chair of the Youth Services

Committee, added that he is advocating in the City Council for the creation of a comprehensive youth initiative that will enable our young people to acquire the education and skills necessary for success in their teen years and throughout adulthood.

Gama Droiville

Gama Droiville thanked everyone for their support and prayers and expressed that he was looking forward to getting back to his normal life.  Jimmy Marcel, Gama’s uncle, expressed his gratitude for the support that the family had received from the 70th Police Precinct, public officials, the media and choir members from his nephew’s church who visited Gama while he was he was a patient at the hospital, and the staff of Kings County Hospital Center.

Dr. Douglas L. Lazzaro, Chair of Kings County Hospital’s Department of Ophthalmology, praised Gama for his courage and great poise throughout his ordeal, adding that Gama was “an inspiration” to the staff of Kings County Hospital Center.  Pastor Daniel Ulysse, who heads the French Speaking Baptist Church, spoke warmly of the positive virtues that Gama exhibits every week as a member of his congregation and expressed the critical need to keep youth off the streets and engaged in positive activities.
